Darren Ferguson confident of Preston’s survival chances

Preston North End boss Darren Ferguson believes his side can begin their climb up the Championship table with a win against Cardiff City on Saturday at 5/1.

Despite sitting rock bottom of the Championship table after a winless November, Ferguson is confident several new signings – including Michael Tonge and Danny Pugh – can bring them a victory in south Wales.

Preston – who drew their last game 0-0 with Millwall – won’t have many better opportunities to beat Cardiff. The Bluebirds have won just one of their last five league games and have lost their previous two against Nottingham Forest and table toppers Queens Park Rangers.

Speaking to the South Wales Echo, Ferguson said: “Most people will write off our chances at Cardiff, but maybe it’s a game which will get our season going and turn it around.

“A lot of people will probably think we’ll get turned over down there. We have to try and build on our Millwall result when we play Cardiff City.

“If we can get to the 50-point mark this season, we will be okay. That means we have to find 35 more points this season or near enough that.

“We are a lot stronger now as a squad than we were a few weeks ago, you only had to look at the bench against Millwall for that.”

Preston may have an improved squad, but it will take more than a good bench for them to get anything out of their trip to south Wales. The Bluebirds are 4/9 to win against a North End side that have kept just one clean sheet in their last 18 games.
