Clean sheet improvement could make Spurs valuable at 40/1 to win title
Published:Jermaine Jenas has identified that Tottenham need to be far more proficient at keeping clean sheets if they are to lay down a serious challenge to win the Premier League this season.
Despite failing to keep a clean sheet since the opening day of the season, Spurs are still just six points off top spot and any sort of improvement in this area could make them a good price at 40/1 to win the top flight for the first time since 1961.
Jenas said: “It’s great winning games 4-3 and so on but there’s going to come a point where you need to win 1-0.
“All the top teams do it and it’s an area we need to improve on if we are going to do anything special this year.”
Manager Harry Redknapp has not been helped by an abundance of injuries at the heart of his defence, with Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson facing lengthy spells on the sidelines and Ledley King still only able to play sparingly.
It is widely appreciated that understandings need to be formed at the heart of the defence to get the best results and it is fair that Tottenham have been constantly mixing and matching in this area.
However, Younes Kaboul and William Gallas have played alongside eachother for the last six Premier League games so there is every reason to expect that the pair should now each be relatively familiar with the other’s style.
Gallas and Kaboul are both likely to start again in Tottenham’s next game against Liverpool, who are a team they have failed to keep a home clean sheet against in the last five attempts.
Spurs are 11/10 to beat Liverpool and ensure that they remain above their opponents in the Premier League standings.
