Cheltenham Town offered financial incentive by chairman

Cheltenham Town fans may be disappointed that their Whaddon Road ground couldn’t stand up to the weather conditions for Tuesday’s game with Southend, but chairman Paul Baker’s promises will provide a little festive cheer.

Should Cheltenham find themselves in the top ten at Christmas, they are currently in eighth place, then Baker has promised to invest in new players.

Cheltenham are currently 40/1 to win League Two, but the news that the club has benefitted financially from their recent FA Cup ties means the Cotswolds club can exert some financial clout in the January transfer window.

“We made £18,000 from the first round. That’s £50,000 we didn’t budget for. It helps cash flow and clears some debt,” said Baker.

“If we’re in the top 10 at Christmas we’ll look to invest in players.”

Over the course of December, Cheltenham should play six games but the postponement of Tuesday night’s game with Southend means it may be just five matches.

These include home ties with Lincoln City, Stockport County and Bradford City and trips to Shrewsbury Town and Torquay United.

The away ties will prove difficult for Mark Yates’ side to pick up points as both Shrewsbury and Torquay are in great form currently, but the Yates will be targeting maximum points from the three home games.

Cheltenham are currently on a five-match unbeaten run and should Cheltenham take 10 points from their next five games, they would find themselves in the top ten of League Two and could the Robins fans could expect to see some new faces at Whaddon Road in January.

The injection of a little cash could go a long way and Cheltenham would suddenly change from mid-table side to serious title challengers and it may be worth taking the 40/1 for Cheltenham to win League Two now.

A £10 stake on Cheltenham to win League Two would return £410. New customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
