Bet on Benfica vs Lyon – French teams have never won at Benfica

Published:

Lyon only need a point from their Group B showdown with Benfica to secure their qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League and this is somewhat fortunate given the record of French teams at the Estadio da Luz.

Claude Puel’s men may have won their opening three Group B games to sit atop the group, but will have to end a miserable streak to make it 12 points out of 12.

No French team has ever won an away game at Benfica, with Lyon 5/2 to become the first to do so, despite having only triumphed once on their previous three visits to Portugal.

Benfica have won their last six domestic league games and kept clean sheets in the last five, which could make them a big price at 11/10 to beat Lyon.

The 4/6 on offer for under 2.5 goals could also prove profitable as Benfica have not scored many in the league and Lyon won the first game between the pair in France 2-0.

In the other Group B game, Hapoel Tel Aviv will be keen to boost their chances of becoming the first Israeli team to avoid finishing bottom of their group by picking up a victory at home to Schalke.

Hapoel lost their opening three group games, but a victory over Schalke will move them to within three points of their German opponents and potentially level on points with Benfica, if they are beaten by Lyon.

Schalke won their home game against Hapoel 3-1 and it is 11/10 that they take the three points again, while a repeat of the same scoreline can be backed at 16/1.

Hapoel are 5/2 to beat Schalke but will need to improve on their defensive record if this is to occur as they have conceded at least twice in all three of their Group B outings so far. See the full Hapoel vs Schalke match betting odds market.
