Upson confident that quality at West Ham enough to beat drop

Matthew Upson is in no doubt that enough talent is possessed in the West Ham squad to avoid Premier League relegation this season, but they need to step up their performances on the pitch.

The Hammers remain three points adrift of safety after nine games following their recent home defeat by Newcastle and this has left them 11/10 to be relegated to the Championship this season.

It was the second-half display against Newcastle which flummoxed the majority of fans and Upson feels that ironing out any formational or positional problems will have West Ham climbing the table in no time with a few victories.

He said: “The manager has to figure out the answers and we have to work on it. That is the only way to progress. If we do that we have enough to see us through this league campaign

“We know two wins is really going to pick you up out of there and thrust you into mid-table area. I think that is an area we feel we can realistically maintain.”

One thing in West Ham’s favour is that this is not a situation that is new to them as they only had six points after nine Premier League games last season.

However, they ended the season one place outside the relegation zone after accumulating 35 points.

Avram Grant’s team travel to Arsenal next and are 11/1 to leave the Emirates with the three points for a first away victory of the campaign.

West Ham won on their first visit to the Emirates in 2007 and will also gain confidence from the fact that West Brom have picked up a victory at the ground this season.

West Ham collected a draw from their tenth game of the season last year when their trip to Sunderland ended 2-2. See the full Arsenal vs West Ham match betting odds market.
