Sneijder hands Inter Serie A boost with decision to remain at the club

Inter Milan’s chances of winning the Serie A title for the sixth season in succession have been given a massive boost by the news that Wesley Sneijder will renew his contract in the next fortnight.

Sneijder’s future with Rafa Benitez’ team has been the topic of much debate in the early stages of the new season with talks about an extension to his current deal having been ongoing since June.

This inability to reach an agreement had resulted in some of Europe’s biggest guns keeping tabs on the situation, with Manchester United seemingly at the forefront of the queue to potentially land his signature.

However, the Dutch playmaker now appears convinced that his immediate future lies in Italy and it is believed that he will sign with Inter for a further two years, which will take him through to 2015.

Sneijder told Corriere dello Sport: “This is my club. I am very happy here and in 15 days’ time I will complete the deal for my renewal.”

Inter are currently 1/1 to win Serie A and they have made a reasonable start in their title defence as they are two points behind early leaders Lazio after six games.

Keeping Sneijder is especially important for Inter as they are not inundated with attacking midfielders who are at home playing through the middle.

Goran Pandev has filled the role in the past when Sneijder has been injured, but is better suited to playing on the left side of a three-pronged attack, while Brazilian prospect Philippe Coutinho is another possible option.

But in theory they would have to buy if they really wanted to replace Sneijder and they would struggle to find a player with matching qualities.

Rivals AC Milan also have 11 points after six Serie A games and are 7/4 to win their first title since 2004. See the complete Serie A winners betting odds market.
