Others need to chip in with goals to help Bent at Sunderland
Danny Welback has stated that other players have to support Darren Bent in scoring the goals at Sunderland if they are finish as high as possible in the Premier League standings.
Bent has been responsible for over half of Sunderland’s Premier League goals since his arrival at the Stadium of Light and has netted five of their seven strikes in the top flight this season.
This has seen him priced at 10/1 to end the campaign as the Premier League’s top goalscorer.
Welbeck is a striker by nature, but has been chosen on the left side of an attacking trio in recent weeks by Bruce and is still yet to score since being signed from Manchester United.
He knows the importance of goals from other sources if they are to climb the Premier League table as they have drawn their last five games, including the last two 0-0.
Welbeck told the Journal Live: “We’ve got to improve our finishing off the final pass. It’s about being more clinical in front of goal, because we can’t just keep relying on Darren to get the goals.
“Everyone’s starting to think they need to do more to chip in and help him out.”
One option open to Bruce is to pick two strikers, with Welbeck one of the candidates to move into a more attacking role.
There is also the option of handing a first Premier League start to record signing Asamoah Gyan, who has been forced to make an impact from the bench after signing from Rennes on the final day of the transfer window.
Sunderland are 7/5 to beat Aston Villa at home in their next Premier League game, with Bent failing to score against Villa in both games against them last season.
