Montgomerie returns to playing status after Ryder Cup win
Published:After spending two years meticulously planning his Ryder Cup campaign, Colin Montgomerie will be able to play the Alfred Dunhill Links championship without the captaincy burden.
Montgomerie will partner his brother Douglas in this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship pro-am format, and the Kingsbarns course in Fife has the privilege of hosting the winning Ryder Cup captain.
The tournament is unlike any other in the golfing calendar with the professionals playing for a $5m prize but also playing for a separate team prize with their amateur partners.
The Alfred Dunhill Links betting market takes into account only the professionals scores with no attention paid to the pro-am side of the event.
Montgomerie isn’t rated in the betting market and is available at 200/1 to win the Alfred Dunhill Links, but Ladbrokes have opened a market for Colin Montgomerie’s finishing position.
The Scotsman has yet to make a cut since the tournament was rebranded the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2006 and is 2/1 to make the cut this year.
But Montgomerie did win the tournament in 2005 and with the Ryder Cup burden lifted, a relaxed Montgomerie could use the euphoria surrounding the Ryder Cup win and produce four strong rounds.
Montgomerie is 50/1 to finish in the top five and 16/1 to finish in the top 10.
Three of Montgomerie’s vice-captains are also featuring in the Alfred Dunhill Links championship and Darren Clarke is the 4/5 favourite to finish better than Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley.
Bjorn has featured regularly on the European Tour this year and has had some strong results including a win at the Portguguese Open and two top 10 finishes at the Wales Open and the Qatar Masters – he is 7/4 to finish the better of the three.
