Manager opens door for controversial winger to leave Oxford

Oxford United winger Sam Deering has been placed on the transfer list.

The winger has not started a game this season and has only managed four substitute appearances in total.

With this in mind, Oxford boss Chris Wilder has decided it is in the youngster’s interest to pursue his career elsewhere.

The most likely destination for Deering is League One struggler’s Leyton Orient after the 19-year-old spent the week on trial with Orient, impressing manager Russell Slade.

He also played for 65 minutes and scored for Orient’s reserve team in their 2-1 win over Crawley Town reserves.

Deering has found it tough to force Matt Green and Jack Midson out of the Oxford starting eleven as they continue to supply top scorer James Constable.

Constable has five league goals and is 14/1 to finish as the League Two top goalscorer.

He also has Alfie Potter and new signing Tom Craddock for competition and will hope to get more game time should he join Orient.

Deering has had a trouble strewn spell at Oxford, he was fined for posting racist comments on his facebook page in 2008 and has twice been dropped for showing up late to team meetings.

Oxford have been inconsistent thus far in their first season back in league football, losing at home to the likes of Aldershot and Stockport, yet they’ve beaten leaders Port Vale and improving Morecambe.

Having begun the season with play-off ambitions, Oxford will need to rack up some wins and quickly if they’re to avoid being sucked into mid table obscurity.

They make a long trip North this weekend to play Macclesfield Town.

The Us are marked at 7/5 to take all the points at Moss Road, where Macclesfield have only won once so far this season.

Macclesfield are 9/5 to beat Oxford and will take heart from the last home league game they played when they overcame Northampton Town 2-0.

James Constable is 5/1 to be the first goal scorer for Oxford. Follow the full NPower League Two betting odds market here.
