Liverpool and Torres start firing but Hodgson needs consistency

Fernando Torres eased the pressure on Roy Hodgson with just his second goal of the season in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat of Blackburn on Sunday.

Liverpool stay in the relegation zone on goal difference after taking the three points on Sunday, but their relegation odds have lengthened from 10/1 to 16/1 as the betting market suggests the win will kick-start Liverpool’s season.

But Roy Hodgson’s side face a tricky away tie to Bolton in their next Premier League game before hosting Chelsea at Anfield, and Liverpool aren’t guaranteed any points from those two fixtures which could see the end to Hodgson’s reign.

Bolton currently sit eighth in the Premier League having taken 12 point from nine games and are yet to lose at home this season.

Liverpool have beaten Bolton on their past three visits to the Reebok stadium but the four previous seasons saw Bolton unbeaten at the Reebok.

The three defeats coincide with Bolton finishing 13th, 14th and 16th in the Premier League, the four unbeaten seasons Bolton never finished worse than 8th and under Owen Coyle, Bolton are reproducing that top half form.

The trip to the Reebok will worry Roy Hodgson as he looks to string back-to-back wins together for the first time this season, and with a tough tie against Chelsea following the Bolton game, Hodgson will need three points to strengthen his position as manager.

Hodgson is currently 1/1 to be the next Premier League manager to leave and the Chelsea game could spell the end of Hodgson’s reign as he searches for the wins to send Liverpool up the Premier League table.

Torres managed just his second goal of the season but is still available at 16/1 to win the Premier League top scorer award despite his poor start.
