Welsh FA may look elsewhere as Toshack faces serious challenge
Published:It was never going to be an easy game for Wales, but John Toshack’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat in Montenegro, mounting calls from within the valleys that it’s time for Toshack to step-down.
Despite losing to a side 11 places higher than them in the FIFA World Rankings, Toshack is under real pressure from external sources to quit and reports suggest he may confirm his resignation in the next 48 hours.
Toshack first took charge of Wales in 2004, in his 53 games as manager he won 21 and lost 24, but he feels he’s taken the current Welsh squad as far as he can and is willing to step down.
Wales face Bulgaria on October 8th at the City of Cardiff stadium and if Toshack doesn’t decide to step-down, that game is seen as the watershed for Toshack’s Wales career.
Among the names touted as potential candidates is Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs, a 12/1 shot to succeed Toshack.
Giggs is on record as saying he would like to become Wales manager one day, but that day may be in the future as any offer would have to tempt Giggs out of his £90,000 a week contract.
Chris Coleman is currently favourite to take over from Toshack at 5/2, but one man who must surely be cosidered is Wales’ under-21 coach Brian Flynn, 5/1.
The under-21 side face Italy on Tuesday and if they avoid defeat, they will be sure of a play-off place for the European Under-21 Championships.
Flynn’s feat is all the more impressive having done so without most of his squad, as Toshack called up the likes of Chris Gunther, Gareth Bale and Ched Evans over the qualifying period.
