Tiger ends trophy less for the first time in 15 professional seasons

Tiger Woods will turn his attention to the Ryder Cup after failing to earn a spot in The Players Championship, the PGA Tour’s season finale.

Despite finishing tied for 15th on Sunday in the BMW Championship, Tiger’s performances over the season haven’t been good enough to see him into the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings, ruling him out of the season finale in two weeks time.

Tiger finished 42nd in the standings and will be bitterly disappointed to miss out on a Championship that when he enters, he wins.

Since the competition was first introduced in 2007, Tiger has won on two of the three occasions (2007 and 2009), injury ruling him out of a title defence in 2008.

Missing out on The Players Championship means that Woods will end the season trophy less, something that has never happened in his professional career.

But Woods loss is America’s gain as he will now turn all his thoughts to helping the USA team regain the Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor resort in October – USA are 13/8 to win the Ryder Cup.

However, USA Captain Corey Pavin insists he is not afraid to drop Woods and that the world number one may not feature in all five of his possible matches.

“Tiger told me he will do whatever is necessary to help the team win and that is going to be my call but I’m not afraid to not play him every match, that’s for sure,” said Pavin.

Woods has struggled with the foursomes and fourballs format in previous tournaments but is still 4/1 to finish as the USA top points scorer.
