Rodgers hails important role played by Dobbie at Swansea

| 20.09.2010

Brendan Rodgers has hailed how important Stephen Dobbie’s goals are going to be to Swansea’s promotion push this season.

Rodgers opted to start with Dobbie on the bench as Swansea ran out 2-0 winners over Scunthorpe, with the striker coming on in the second half to net his third league goal of the campaign.

The win lifted Swansea into the play-off positions and continues a fine spate of form which has seen them triumph in three of their last four games.

New loan signing Frank Nouble started against Scunthorpe in attack, but Rodgers pointed out that the contribution that Dobbie makes to matches will remain pivotal to their chances of winning the Championship, for which they are currently 16/1.

Rodgers told Wales Online: “Stephen’s a wonderful finisher and when he gets the opportunity to score he takes it. He’s a very important part of my group, not just now but for the future as well.

“He’s there ready to contribute and you could see by his performance when he came on that he’s a great team player with great movement who can make the difference.”

Dobbie is 33/1 to finish the season as the Championship’s top scorer and is currently vying for this honour at Swansea with Scott Sinclair, who also has three league goals from the opening seven games.

Winning their four league fixtures at home has been influential in Swansea’s strong start and they will have to try to take this form on their travels as their next two Championship fixtures are both away at Nottingham Forest and Watford.

However, first they go on the road to Peterborough to attempt to reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup and are 7/5 to win inside the 90 minutes.

QPR are the current 7/4 favourites to win the Championship this season. See the full Championship winners market.
