Palace turn to Vaughan to fire them up Championship table
Published:James Vaughan could prove the answer to Crystal Palace’s need for goals in the Championship this season after arriving on loan for three months from Everton.
Palace were short of recognised strikers after Alan Lee moved to Huddersfield before the transfer window closed so George Burley moved quickly to seal the services of Vaughan.
He will now go straight into the squad that travels to Reading for Palace’s next Championship game and they are yet to score in their two away league fixtures so far.
Meanwhile, they have scored only twice in their last four league games, one of which was an own goal.
They are 7/2 to pick up the victory over Reading and the three points will be especially useful in moving them away from the periphery of the relegation zone.
Vaughan, who is 7/1 to open the socring against Reading, has found it difficult to break into the Everton first team in recent seasons and has found himself behind Louis Saha, Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu in the pecking order at Goodison Park.
He has also been hampered by knee and shoulder problems in recent seasons and has Championship experience through previous loan spells at Derby and Leicester.
Ironically, Vaughan is perhaps best known for being the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history when finding the net against Crystal Palace as a 16-year-old in 2005.
Vaughan’s capture ends a busy period in the transfer market for Burley after he signed Edgar Davids on a pay-as-you-play deal and strengthened his defence by bringing in Anthony Gardner on loan from Hull as Palace look to defy odds of 150/1 to win the Championship.
