Northampton coup Newcastle United defender on month loan

Northampton Town have added a Premier League experienced defender to their ranks in a bid to climb the League Two table.

20-year-old Ben Tozer has joined Northampton until the 14th October in a bid to gain first team experience and could be handed his Cobblers debut in their tie with Liverpool tonight – they are 14/1 to win.

Tozer has only managed the one start for Newcastle in a 2-0 defeat to Peterborough in the League Cup and Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is keen to see the young defender play some first team games.

“Ben is a highly rated young player who will improve us over the next few weeks and he will hopefully gain some experience that he will find useful,” said Northampton boss Ian Sampson.

“He was really keen to come and already his attitude to get stuck in and do well for the club has impressed me.”

Not since playing out a 0-0 draw at home to Accrington Stanley on the first day of the season has Northampton kept a clean sheet and Cobblers boss Ian Sampson hopes the addition of Tozer will fix their defensive problems.

Tozer will continue his run in the side when Northampton host pre-season League Two favourites Bradford on Saturday.

Bradford have struggled at the start of the season and join Northampton with just seven points from seven games in the League.

Northampton are 13/10 favourites to take the three points and Bradford can be backed at 2/1 in the League Two match betting market.

The draw is available at 12/5. See the full Northampton vs Bradford match betting market here.
