Mickelson wants FedEx win and world number one tag at East Lake
Published:With Tiger Woods working on his Ryder Cup game, Phil Mickelson is looking to get two over his old foe with a win at the Tour Championship which would make him world number one.
Tiger had won every FedEx Cup he’d ever taken part in until missing out this year, and there are a host of names lining up to capitalise on his absence.
None more so than Phil Mickelson who has won at the East Lake course on two occasions, including his win in this tournament last year, and is 7/1 favourite to win the Tour Championship.
Matt Kuchar currently leads the FedEx Cup standings and has been in impeccable form all year, he’s 10/1 to triumph at East Lake and after 11 top ten finishes this season, it would be silly to rule the USA Ryder Cup player out.
The Tour Championship has never proven popular with Europeans with no wins since the inaugural tournament in 1987, but Paul Casey is smarting from his Ryder Cup snub and has been playing some incredible golf since Colin Montgomerie’s announcement.
Casey currently lies third in the FedEx Cup and is the shortest price European at 14/1 and is 5/4 to be the top European player.
Ernie Els has not finished worse than 29th in the seven events that he’s played at East Lake since 2000, and with five top ten finishes in those seven starts, he’s a decent price at 16/1.
The same can be said for Retief Goosen, whose worse finish is 23rd in five starts, winning at East Lake in 2004 and he can be backed at 20/1 in the PGA Tour betting market.
But Steve Stricker is the only man to have finished in the top ten in all FedEx Cup playoffs and the world number four is a certainty to be battling away come Sunday evening.
