Lahm believes Bayern’s players have duty to turn around season
Published:Philipp Lahm believes that the playing staff at Bayern Munich should be solely blamed for the club’s disappointing start to the Bundesliga season.
Bayern remain 5/6 to win the Bundesliga despite sitting ninth in the standings after six games, ten points adrift of surprise pace setters Mainz.
Munich lost for the second time in the league this season when falling to a 2-1 defeat at home to Mainz in their last game, while a shortage of goals may also be a cause for concern as they have only found the target five times.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has noted that the players and not coach Louis van Gaal are responsible for the start and Lahm feels the same way.
He said: “We have too many players who are performing below their level.
“We have got to ensure we find our true form immediately. It is going to be really tough for us now to make up this ten-point deficit on Mainz and that is not what we wanted.”
Bayern’s next game is away to Basle in the Champions League and then they are away again upon their return from Switzerland as they head to Borussia Dortmund.
Munich are 6/4 to beat Dortmund, but the home side will be no pushovers and currently sit second in the Bundesliga table.
This has been partly down to the scoring exploits of Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa, who has struck four times in six games, and Dortmund are also 6/4 to beat Bayern.
