John Toshack resigns as Wales manager after a six year spell
Published:Amidst calls from ex-professionals for John Toshack to step down, the Wales manager has relinquished his post with immediate effect.
Wales stuttered to a 1-0 defeat in Montenegro last week and that result seems to have forced John Toshack’s hand, with Ryan Giggs, Chris Coleman and John Hartson all in the running to replace him.
Toshack has been away for a couple of days but admits that he doesn’t feel pushed out and the former Real Madrid manager believes he’s taken the team as far as he can.
“Whoever comes in, I hope there’s an upsurge, and I hope people get behind them as the group is still very very open” said Toshack.
Under-21 coach Brian Flynn has emerged as the front runner for the job after they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2011 under-21 European Championships earlier in the week and he is 3/1 to be appointed.
The man that the Welsh FA are desperately after is Giggs, 12/1, but it remains to be seen whether they can tempt the Manchester United man to cut his playing career short along with his £90,000 a week contract.
John Hartson, 12/1, has expressed a huge interest in taking on the Wales job but one man that will not be in the running is Tony Pulis.
The Stoke City boss admits he would love to manage Wales one day but says it’s too early in his career to consider it at the moment, and his main priority is keeping Stoke in the Premier League.
With games in October against Bulgaria and Switzerland, the Welsh FA will be looking to appoint someone quickly and ex-Wales international and ex-Fulham manager, Chris Coleman, 9/4, is without a job.
