High asking price makes it difficult for Hutton to leave Spurs
Published:Alan Hutton feels that his asking price at Tottenham needs to be lowered considerably if he is to escape White Hart Lane in the January transfer window.
Tottenham paid £9m for Hutton’s services when buying him from Rangers but he has seen his chances of first-team football limited by Harry Redknapp, who has preferred to operate Vedran Corluka or Younes Kaboul ahead of him at right-back.
If Hutton does not manage to feature in more games in the coming months then he will have no choice but to look for a move elsewhere, although he fears that Tottenham’s desire to recoup a large portion of their outlay may make such a transfer difficult.
He told the Sunday Mail: “I moved to Spurs for big money and if I leave, the club will be wanting that. But it’s tough to get someone to pay that kind of cash when you haven’t been playing.
“It’s not a great situation to be in. I just need to keep my head up at the moment and keep going.”
Hutton spent a successful second-half of last season on loan at Sunderland, but any hopes of a permanent switch were dashed when Steve Bruce was priced out of making a suitable bid.
One thing in Hutton’s favour is that Tottenham will be challenging in four competitions this season and Redknapp will have to regularly rotate his squad in order to ensure his players remain fresh.
Tottenham’s main goal is likely to be to preserve their position in the top four from last season and they are 7/2 to achieve this feat.
They currently sit mid-table in the Premier League after an unexpected home defeat to Wigan, but they are 50/1 to put this behind them and go on to win the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Spurs were drawn against north London rivals Arsenal in the third round of the Carling Cup and are 7/1 to triumph in the tournament for the second time in four years.
