Federer ready to avenge his French Open exit to Robin Soderling
Published:Robin Soderling advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open with a four-set victory over Spain’s Albert Montanes, the fifth seed coming from a set down to win 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3.
The Swede will now face Roger Federer in the last eight where he is a 3/1 chance to beat the Swiss star.
Federer, 2/9 to beat Soderling, leads the Swede 12-1 in head-to-head but lost their last match at the French Open this year, ending his run of 23 consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals.
Soderling admitted after his victory was looking forward to testing himself against Federer again, stating, “It’s always a very nice feeling to play against the world’s best – it’s matches like that you train for.
“It’s matches like that I’ve been dreaming of playing since I started playing tennis, playing at the big courts in the big tournaments. It’s very fun.
“I’ve played Roger many times. I know his game and he knows mine. I’m pretty sure how I need to play to have a chance to win but it’s going to be extremely difficult.”
Federer has cruised through the first four rounds of the US Open without dropping a set.
Add to that his drought ending win in the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and it’s looking ominous that Federer will add to his Slam collection.
He’s 5/4 to win the US Open but all his thoughts will be on avenging his French Open exit with Soderling likely to feel the brunt of Federer’s power – Federer is 11/10 favourite to finish the match in three sets.
Soderling will take heart from the French Open after drawing a blank against Federer for so long and is 8/1 to win in five sets.
