Anelka silences Marseille support as Chelsea stay top of Group F

Published:

If it seemed Marseille had moved to Chelsea on Tuesday as Stamford Bridge was raucous with the sound of Frenchmen, it didn’t appear to affect the Chelsea players one bit.

Especially Nicolas Anelka, the brunt of the Marseille abuse came his way after his role in the debacle that was the French World Cup campaign.

The Marseille fans were in great voice, creating a hostile atmosphere for most of the game and silencing the Chelsea fans.

In previous years this may have affected Anelka’s game but the Frenchman revelled in Tuesday night’s atmosphere and nonchalantly struck home a penalty that suppressed the Marseille crowd.

Anelka is 7/1 to be the Champions League top scorer and he already has three goals in the competition from two games.

With Didier Drogba returning to the side after completing his two match suspension, Anelka may have to settle for a lesser role in the upcoming double header with Spartak Moscow.

But a home game against MSK Zilina will provide the Frenchman with a chance to enhance his goal tally.

The 2-0 win leaves Chelsea with maximum points from their first two games and the double header with Spartak Moscow will decide who tops Group F.

Spartak also have maximum points from their first two games and the first of the two matches with Chelsea is in Moscow, leaving the Russians with the slight advantage to apply some pressure to the Blues.

Chelsea are now 5/1 second favourites to win the Champions League behind Barcelona, 5/2, who play Rubin Kazan on Wednesday in the Nou Camp.

Barcelona are 4/7 to win in Russia. See the full Champions League football betting odds market here.
