Agger critical of long-ball style being implemented at Liverpool
Published:Daniel Agger is opting to stick to his football principles and rebel against the style of football that Roy Hodgson is trying to introduce at Liverpool.
Agger has struggled to dislodge Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel from the centre of Liverpool’s defence since Hodgson’s move from Fulham and was being employed at left-back before the arrival of Paul Konchesky at the end of the transfer window.
He found himself on the bench in the recent defeat at Manchester United and Liverpool will be keen to get their Premier League campaign back on track when they host Sunderland next.
Agger is hoping for a start but told a Danish television channel that his reluctance to follow a long-ball style may be hindering his chances of doing so.
He said: “I’m here to play football and not to unload. The manager has a philosophy that we’re playing football further up the pitch and then you have to play a different kind of football at the back.
“That’s not my style. That’s not the type of football player I am. I like to keep the ball on the ground and I’m going to keep doing that. Whether he’ll use me or not, time will tell.”
Liverpool are 2/5 to beat Sunderland, which would represent only their second league victory of the campaign after a disappointing start that sees them sit just one point outside of the relegation zone and ten points behind leaders Chelsea.
Hodgson’s team began the campaign in good spirits and were 12/1 to win the Premier League, but their early-season struggles have resulted in this price soaring to 66/1.
