Wigan vs Chelsea – holders to compound misery for porous Latics
Chelsea secured last season’s Premier League title with an overwhelming 8-0 win when these two sides last met in May.
Wigan, however, won the corresponding fixture at the DW Stadium 3-1, and their title-chasing opponents will be mindful of falling foul to another upset when they travel to Lancashire on Saturday.
In 10 Premier League meetings between the sides, Chelsea have the superior record of eight wins and 24 goals. Another victory for the holders seems a formality at 1/4.
Chelsea are also a side in lethal form of late. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have scored 23 goals in their last four Premier League matches, and they will be as ruthless as ever at the DW Stadium.
Last season’s shock win will encourage Wigan, however, as will their draw at Stamford Bridge in 2008, and they will be desperate to upset their illustrious opponents again.
At 11/1, though, a win for the Latics is distinctly improbable.
Priced at 5/4 to be relegated, Wigan are expected to struggle this season, and judging by their dismal showing against Blackpool last weekend, the bleak forecasts are justified.
Even for a side who twice conceded eight goals in a game last season, the 4-0 loss to Blackpool represented a nadir for Roberto Martinez’s men.
A defeat of the same scoreline is available at 10/1, and if the Wigan defending is anywhere near as bad as it was against the Tangerines, Chelsea could hit double figures.
Didier Drogba was unstoppable as he scored a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 6-0 opening day demolition of West Brom, and the totemic forward is 5/2 to open the scoring against Wigan.
