Wigan vs Blackpool – Latics out to trample on Tangerine dream

Published:

The last time Wigan and Blackpool met in the league, they were vying for three points in the old Division Two.

This Lancashire derby, however, sees the teams do battle in the Premier League, and Wigan are convincing 4/5 favourites to start their season with a win.

Blackpool were comprehensive 4-1 winners when they faced Wigan in last year’s Carling Cup, but the fixture at the DW Stadium will be a different proposition altogether.

Wigan only lost one home league match to a team from the bottom half last season, and manager Roberto Martinez will be keen for his team to maintain their proficiency against the division’s weaker sides.

New Latics signing Mauro Boselli is the favourite to open the scoring at 9/2, while last season’s top scorer Hugo Rodallega is priced at 5/1 to break the deadlock.

This will be a first match in the Premier League for Blackpool and their manager Ian Holloway, and the Seasiders are 7/2 to mark the occasion with a win.

The fixture was originally meant to be played at Blackpool, but due to construction work at Bloomfield Road, the tie was switched.

Holloway’s men made Bloomfield Road a fortress last season, losing just four games, but they could struggle away from their own ground in the Premier League.

Despite signing five players this week, the Tangerine squad is still desperately short of quality, and a Wigan side boosted by the likes of Boselli should begin their campaign with a win.
