Wenger signs new deal and says Arsenal are ready to deliver
Published:Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has signed a new contract which will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until the end of the 2013/14 season.
Wenger’s current deal was due to expire at the end of this campaign, but the Frenchman is determined to win a first trophy with the Gunners since 2005.
“My heart belongs to Arsenal and my desire is to see this team win silverware,” Wenger said.
“My commitment and drive are as strong and fresh as ever,” he added. “Signing a new deal means that I can see this talented group of players reach their potential. Trust me, they are ready to deliver.”
Having convinced Cesc Fabregas to stay at the Emirates Stadium and made some shrewd summer signings, Wenger will be eyeing a first Premier League title since 2004, which Arsenal are 6/1 to win.
Arsenal begin their Premier League season with a difficult away trip to Liverpool, who they are 15/8 to beat.
One of Wenger’s most notable acquisitions, Marouane Chamakh, has impressed in pre-season friendlies, and the Moroccan is an enticing 6/1 to open the scoring at Anfield.
Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, has handed in a transfer request at Craven Cottage.
The Gunners had a £2m bid rejected for the Australian at the end of last season, but Fulham boss Mark Hughes now expects the 37-year-old to depart.
“He has indicated that he would like the opportunity to leave,” Hughes said. “If Arsenal do come back and talk to me or my chief executive, then further conversations will be had.”
