A single Tiger Woods sets out to defend his FedEx cup title
Published:After announcing his divorce to Elin Nordegren yesterday, Tiger Woods will arrive at the Ridgewood Country Club on Thursday for the first leg of the FedEx Cup, single and amidst much speculation over his form.
The World number one is unable to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup next month and is reliant on USA captain Corey Pavin to hand him a wildcard spot, which Pavin will no doubt do if Tiger can reproduce the form he’s capable of this week at The Barclays.
Tiger won the inaugural FedEx Cup in 2007 and was also victorious in 2009 – a dodgy knee in 2008 ruled Woods out of the competition – and he is looking to make it three wins from three appearances despite his off-course troubles.
His form this season since his return has been erratic, finishing tied for fourth in the Masters and US Open but also missing the cut for only the sixth time in his career.
His ongoing personal problems are well documented but now he’s announced to the press that the divorce is final, Tiger may be able to focus on his golf and maintain a serious challenge for an event which he no doubt likes.
Because of his inconsistent performances Woods represents excellent value at 12/1 joint favourite with Phil Mickelson to win The Barclays.
However one man Tiger will need to be weary of is Matt Kuchar, who has had an impressive five top tens in his last seven starts, and after tying for third in last week’s SBS Championships will be looking to take that confidence into the play-off format.
At 33/1 Kuchar is excellent value to win the first leg of the FedEx Cup.
