Stoke vs Tottenham – Jones could return to lift Potters
Published:Stoke are hopeful that striker Kenwyne Jones can recover from his ankle injury in time to face Tottenham at the Britannia Stadium.
Jones, a summer signing for a club record fee of £8m from Sunderland, had feared that he would be out for weeks after suffering the injury during his Potters debut against Wolves last Saturday.
But a scan has revealed only minor damage, and the 25-year-old is in contention to play. Jones is 6/1 to open the scoring.
Even if the rangy Trinidadian isn’t healthy enough to start, he could also be well worth backing at 7/4 to score at any time.
In their four Premier League fixtures to date, Stoke and Tottenham have both won two matches each.
Tottenham won the corresponding fixture 2-1 last season, courtesy of goals from then loan player Eidur Gudjohnsen and Niko Kranjcar.
Having claimed a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane last term, however, Stoke will also be confident of claiming the three points. They are 8/1 to win by the same scoreline this time.
The Potters could give a home debut to new signing Jonathan Walters, who has joined from Ipswich in a deal worth an initial £2.75m.
Tottenham’s latest recruit William Gallas, however, has not been registered in time to feature for the visitors.
Having lost 3-2 to Swiss outfit Young Boys in a Champions League qualifier this week, Spurs could be a little weary, and Stoke will be looking to take advantage of any fatigue.
Tony Pulis’ men may have lost their opening game of the season to Wolves, but they are 13/5 to recover with a win against Spurs.
The Potters are renowned for their solidity at the Britannia Stadium – they conceded just 21 goals at home last season – and they will again pose Spurs with a rugged barricade this weekend.
