Resurgent Torquay set early pace at the top of League Two
Published:After a disappointing 17th place finish last season, Torquay are the surprise leaders of League Two having won their first two matches in convincing fashion.
The Gulls are now 10/1 to win the League Two title this season, and their resolute backline and free-scoring forwards look like a potent combination.
Having beaten fellow promotion chasers Northampton 3-0 on the opening weekend, Torquay continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-0 victory at Lincoln.
A brace of goals from Elliot Benyon secured three points at Sincil Bank, sending the visitors top and condemning the hosts to the very root of the table.
Benyon’s header from a Kevin Nicholson free-kick and his second from Chris Zebroski’s cross were the forward’s second and third strikes of the season.
Having notched 11 goals last season, Benyon is already a quarter of the way to surpassing his total from the last campaign, and he is a tempting 14/1 to be League Two’s top scorer this season.
Torquay goalkeeper Chris Bevan had another solid game at Sincil Bank, and his clean sheet means that the Gulls have gone 871 minutes without conceding a league goal.
Next up for Torquay will be the visit of pre-season title favourites Bradford, who will do well to score a goal – never mind win – at Torquay’s fortress Plainmoor.
