Promotion chasers Peterborough thrashed on south coast

Peterborough’s encouraging start to life in League One came to an abrupt end with a shock 5-1 loss away at promoted Bournemouth, who were two leagues below them last year.

Gary Johnson’s men had got underway with a 3-0 victory over Bristol Rovers and were resounding 4-1 winners against Rotherham in the Carling Cup but were put in their place by the previously winless Cherries.

Highly-rated 22-year-old Brett Pitman was the star performer for the promoted hosts, with the striker who netted 26 times in League Two last season showing he can handle the step up with a 16-minute second-half hat-trick.

Pitman, who has been at Dean Court since the age of 16, can be backed at 12/1 to be League One’s top goalscorer, while Posh are 10/1 to recover from this setback and lift the title.
