Norwich vs Watford – Holt in race to make Championship opener

Published:

Norwich could be without their talismanic striker Grant Holt when they kick off the new Championship season against Watford tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).

Holt is the 7/2 favourite to score first, but as he is due in court in Shropshire on the day of the match, the forward risks not making it back to Carrow Road in time for kick-off.

Norwich are convincingly priced at 4/5 to win, and boosted by a clutch of fine summer signings, the Canaries should overpower their opponents.

Former Wolves midfielder Andrew Surman and ex-Gillingham striker Simeon Jackson have arrived, and Norwich are a tempting 5/1 bet to be promoted this season.

Much is expected of Canadian forward Jackson, and the man who struck 19 league goals in his last campaign with Gillingham is 5/1 to open the scoring.

Watford have new signings Rene Gilmartin and Tom Aldred available, but the Hornets could be without defender Dale Bennett, who is an injury doubt.

Not much is expected of the visitors at Carrow Road, and their slim hopes are reflected by their price of 7/2 to claim an unlikely victory.

By means of the league table’s alphabetical starting order, Watford begin the season at the foot of the table, and many expect them to be there by the campaign’s end.

Malk Mackay’s side finished 16th last season, and as 33/1 rank outsiders for promotion this term, Vicarage Road could again host a battle to avoid the drop.
