Molinari brothers face final day battle at Gleneagles
Published:Edoardo Molinari is in contention for his seventh title in 18 months but will have to oust his brother, Francesco, from the top spot in order to triumph.
A 69 in the third round of the Johnnie Walker Championship has left Edoardo one shot behind Francesco as they enter the final day at Gleneagles, and a win for Eduardo should, you would think, secure a wildcard entry for the Ryder Cup.
Edoardo is 4/1 to win in Scotland but Francesco is the stronger 9/4 favourite to lift the trophy tomorrow afternoon.
Meanwhile Simon Dyson is two shots off the lead and if he can win with Miguel Angel Jimenez finishing outside the top nine, Dyson will nick the final automatic Ryder Cup spot from the palms of Jimenez.
Even if Jimenez does what he has to do, Dyson will still get in if he wins and Peter Hanson is outside the top 43, unlikely as the Swede is level with Jimenez on six under par, three shots off the lead.
Francesco secured his spot in the Ryder Cup team when Ross McGowan pulled out of the Championships on Thursday, and he will be hoping his brother can join him in the European team.
No matter where he finishes in Scotland, Edoardo can’t manage an automatic spot in the European team, but his form means it will be tough on the Italian if Colin Montgomerie fails to pick him.
Montgomerie is no stranger to controversy and will be making some contentious decisions throughout Sunday as he decides who are the best three options to enhance the European Ryder Cup team to win a tournament they are 4/7 favourites for.
