Middlesbrough strikers favourites to be Championship top scorers

Any Championship team with title-winning or even promotion dreams will need a player to score them a substantial number of goals in order to achieve this feat.

Both Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan found the target 17 times for Newcastle as they took the title last year, while Charlie Adam struck 18 goals for play-off winners Blackpool.

Despite losing their opening game of the season at home to Ipswich, Middlesbrough remain as leading contenders for promotion and the array of strikers at their disposal is one of the chief reasons for this.

One of which is Kris Boyd, who arrived at Gordon Strachan’s side over the summer on a free transfer after scoring goals for fun in Scotland in recent seasons.

Boyd netted 26 goals in 40 games at Rangers last season and is the all-time leading scorer in SPL history.

He is 7/1 to finish as the top Championship scorer, just ahead of Middlesbrough teammate Scott McDonald, who is a 12/1 chance.

The Australian struck the Middlesbrough goal in the Ipswich defeat and followed up by grabbing the opener in a 2-1 victory in the Carling Cup first round against Chesterfield.

Cardiff’s Michael Chopra is 14/1 and has been prolific at Championship level in the past, including when helping himself to 18 goals as Cardiff reached the play-off final last season.

David Nugent is 20/1 and could prove Portsmouth leading goalscoring threat, while Rob Hulse opened his season’s account in Leeds’ defeat on the first day of the season at home to Derby and is also 20/1.

Burnley have retained the majority of their squad that was relegated from the Premier League and new signing Chris Iwelumo is likely to feature heavily in their plans to secure an immediate promotion.

He is 25/1 after scoring the only goal in Burnley’s win over Nottingham Forest on the opening day.

Freddy Eastwood scored both goals as Coventry got off to a winning start and he is 33/1. See the entire Championship top-scorer betting market.
