McLaren agrees personal terms to bring Diego to Wolfsburg

Steve McLaren is closing in on a third big transfer coup of the summer for Wolfsburg by reaching a deal to sign Brazilian playmaker Diego from Juventus.

The former England manager has already brought in Danish defensive prospect Simon Kjaer and German centre-back Arne Friedrich and has now made moves to bolster his attacking options.

Wolfsburg have managed to agree personal terms with the 25-year-old, although a transfer fee does still need to be sorted out with the Italian giants.

It is believed that Juventus want to recoup a large chunk of the sum that they paid to Werder Bremen last year and are looking for €19m.

However, Wolfsburg may struggle to afford such a price and could be forced into selling Zvjezdan Misimovic to help raise additional funds.

If Diego does return to Germany, he could form a dangerous attacking threesome alongside the Bundesliga’s top scorer last season Edin Dzeko and Diego’s fellow Brazilian international Grafite.

Wolfsburg are currently 12/1 to claim their second ever Bundesliga title after their surprising win two seasons ago and they have avoided the distraction of a European cup campaign after only finishing eighth in the league last season.

Meanwhile, Grafite spared McLaren’s blushes in his first game on the Wolfsburg bench as they made hard work of progressing through the first round of the German Cup.

Grafite scored in the final minute to ensure a 2-1 victory over Munster after a Dzeko own goal four minutes from time cancelled out Cicero’s opener.
