Manchester United pay buy-out clause for wonderkid Bebe
Published:Manchester United continue to build for the future by striking a deal with Vitoria Guimaraes for promising young forward Bebe.
The 20-year-old only arrived at the Portuguese club last month, but Sir Alex Ferguson has moved quickly to sign the striker on the advice of former assistant Carlos Queiroz.
The Red Devils, who are 9/4 to win the Premier League this season, have matched Bebe’s £7.4m buy-out clause with the deal subject to a medical being passed later this week.
Bebe becomes the third new young face to arrive at Old Trafford ahead of the new Premier League season, following Chris Smalling’s transfer from Fulham and Mexican starlet Javier Hernandez.
Meanwhile, his raw pace and power will provide another option for Ferguson in attack to compete for a starting berth alongside the likes of Hernandez, Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen.
His chances of breaking into the first team have been eased by Mame Biram Diouf being shipped out to Blackburn on loan for the season and Danny Welbeck moving increasingly closer to sealing a switch to Sunderland.
Real Madrid were also said to be interested in acquiring the services of Bebe, who until recently was plying his trade in the Portuguese Third Division with Estrela da Amadora.
Rooney is the 1/2 favourite to finish as United’s top Premier League scorer this season, having found the net 26 times in the league during the last campaign when regularly employed as a lone striker.
He will be hoping to continue where he left off when United play at home to Newcastle in their opening game of the season.
They are comfortable 1/4 favourites to pick up the three points, with Rooney 4/7 to strike at any time in the 90 minutes and 11/4 to be the first goalscorer.
