League Two top scorers – Jevons could go on goal gorge

The 2009/10 League Two season was exciting both for its unpredictable climax and the goal-scoring feats of the division’s top forwards.

Of the top ten marksmen in the division, each averaged over 22, with Lee Hughes winning the award on 30 strikes.

His Notts County team won the league at a canter, meaning he can’t retain his crown, but a host of players are ready to stake a claim to it when the season starts this weekend.

Top of the list to be named top scorer is Adam Le Fondre (7/1), last season’s runner-up with 27 goals, who has the play-off final defeat his team suffered still fresh in the memory.

That loss to Dagenham and Redbridge is sure to spur the 23-year-old this campaign.

Named in the division’s PFA team of last season, the former Stockport County and Rochdale striker has a tireless work ethic and manages to score goals wherever he goes. It’s this knack that has alerted him to the attention of Championship sides Leicester and Derby, but so far he’s stayed put.

Indeed, it is this potential transfer up the leagues that makes plumping for one of those in the group behind him an attractive proposition.

Morecambe striker Phil Jevons is the pick of the players currently joint-second in the odds, at 14/1 to be the League Two top scorer.

The former Everton youth scored 18 goals for the Shrimps last season and with his experience and Craig Stanley’s set pieces, the 30-year-old can get more during this campaign.

Jack Lester is another with a football history at a higher level and despite playing only 27 games last term through injury, he scored 11 goals. In the 2008/09 season when fully fit he notched 20 times in 37 matches for Chesterfield.

The 34-year-old ex-Nottingham Forest man is a 14/1 price to win the division’s Golden Boot.

Port Vale’s Marc Richards (19 goals last year) and Bury’s Ryan Lowe (18 goals) are the other players on 14/1 to finish the League Two season as its top scorer. Crewe’s Calvin Zola is a tempting 16/1 bet.
