Hangeland nets Fulham equaliser as Manchester United drop silly points
Published:Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that Manchester United lost “silly points” after Brede Hangeland scored in the final minute to earn Fulham a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.
The Red Devils are 9/4 to win the Premier League after dropping two points when the Norwegian defender headed home from a corner.
United led twice in Mark Hughes’ first home game in charge of Fulham through Paul Scholes’s 25-yard drive from a well worked corner and a Hangeland own goal when another corner deflected in off his shin.
However, Simon Davies brought Fulham level once and then Hangeland ensured that they retained their unbeaten start following their goalless draw at Bolton on the opening day of the season.
Ferguson’s team had the chance to wrap up the points late on before Hangeland’s equaliser but Nani saw his penalty saved by David Stockdale after Damien Duff was adjudged to have handled in the box.
The United manager said: “You don’t want to be dropping silly points and we dropped silly points today. We can’t escape that. There was an opportunity to go 3-1 ahead and we didn’t take it.
“It was a missed opportunity I feel and it galvanised them, got the crowd up and they scored the equaliser in the end.”
Ferguson added that he thought Ryan Giggs should have stepped up for the penalty, particularly as he scored twice from the spot against Tottenham last season.
Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney is 8/1 to finish the season as the Premier League’s top goalscorer despite not featuring against Fulham because of illness.
Chelsea are the 5/4 favourites to win the Premier League and are the only team to still have a 100 per cent winning start to the Premier League season.
