Federer and Roddick in first round action at Flushing Meadows

New York welcomes the final Grand Slam event of the calendar Monday and Roger Federer and local favourite Andy Roddick are both in action.

For Federer, it’s his last opportunity to win a Grand Slam tournament in 2010 and he will be looking to go one better than his runners-up finish last year when he takes on Argentinian world number 94, Brian Dabul.

The two have never faced off against each other before but naturally Federer is a very strong 1/200 favourite to progress and can win in straight sets at 1/8.

America will be hoping Andy Roddick, 16/1 for the title, can make short work of his first round opponent, Frenchman Stephane Robert.

Robert made the final on the hardcourts of the South African Tennis Open in July, but with a boisterous American crowd behind him, Roddick should make light work and is available at 2/9 to win 3-0.

In the women’s draw, favourite Kim Clijsters is 10/3 to emerge from Flushing Meadows victorious and the 1/66 suggests that her first round opponent, German Greta Arn, has little chance of defeating Clijsters.

With the withdrawal of Serena Williams, hopes of an American victory rest with Maria Sharapova or Serena’s sister Venus.

Venus opens her attempt for a third US Open against Italian Roberta Vinci and is 1/14 to win.

The two have met just once, earlier this year at the Sony Ericsson Open and Venus won 6-1, 6-4 – a repeat of the straight sets win is 2/9 and Vinci is unlikely to offer any resistance to the power of Venus.

Venus has never won a tournament that hasn’t featured her sister and is 10/1 to win the US Open. Follow the latest US Open tennis betting market here.
