Reigning Champion del Potro withdraws from US Open
Published:World number one, Rafael Nadal, will head to Flushing Meadows as the top seed at the 2010 US Open men’s singles tournament – but defending champion Juan Martin del Potro will not be amongst the line-up.
The Argentine hasn’t played since the Australian Open at the start of the year due to surgery that was required on his wrist in May, and as a result is unable to defend his crown.
Nadal enters the tournament as reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion but has yet to add the US Open to his trophy reel and with Roger Federer seemingly entering form at the perfect stage, it’s easy to oppose Nadal’s 11/4 odds.
Federer enters the tournament as second seed despite being third in the world rankings behind Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and after his ATP victory in Cincinnati last week he heads the market as the 9/4 favourite.
Djokovic, naturally, is seeded third whilst Andy Murray can look forward to a possible semi-final meeting with Federer after being seeded fourth.
Murray, who is coach-less after parting ways with Miles Maclagan last month, is a 3/1 shot to secure his maiden grand slam title.
His impressive showing on the hard courts recently confirms his form is comparable to that which has previously seen him reach the US Open final.
The top ranked American seed is Andy Roddick, ninth, who lost to fellow compatriot and 19th seed Mardy Fish in the semi-finals in Cincinnati last week.
Both Roddick and Fish will fancy their chances in front of their home crowd this week and are available at odds of 16/1 and 33/1 respectively.
