Celtic target Speroni to increase goalkeeping options

Julian Speroni has emerged as a potential target to replace Artur Boruc as the number one at Celtic for the upcoming season.

Polish shot-stopper Lukasz Zaluska played between the sticks as Celtic were eliminated from the Champions League third qualifying round by Portuguese side Braga 4-2 on aggregate, despite winning the second leg at home 2-1.

Celtic are now in the draw for the third qualifying round of the Europe League instead and manager Neil Lennon is keen to increase his options in the goalkeeping position after Boruc left for Fiorentina.

Sky Sports suggests that Lennon has made an approach to Crystal Palace for Speroni, who would also bring with him experience of playing in Scotland as he was previously on the books of Dundee.

Celtic are 66/1 to land the Europa League and win a first European competition since 1967, when they triumphed in the Champions League in its former guise of the European Cup.

However, first they must overhaul Dutch outfit Utrecht, with a victory over two legs taking them through to the group stages of the competition.

Celtic play their home leg first and are 4/7 to qualify.

Liam Lawrence is another player linked with a move to Parkhead from Stoke and could end up being a replacement for Aiden McGeady if he completes his proposed £9.5 million switch to Spartak Moscow.

On the domestic front, Lennon’s charges are 4/6 to reclaim the SPL title after Rangers ended their three-year dominance last season.
