Aston Villa reeling after manager Martin O’Neill resigns
Published:Martin O’Neill has dealt Aston Villa a hammer blow by announcing his resignation just days before the start of the new season.
Villa are 5/6 to win their first match of the season, at home to West Ham on August 14th, though they will have to do so with a new man at the helm.
Reserve team manager Kevin MacDonald has taken temporary charge of the team, though Alan Curbishley is being touted as an early possible successor.
The reasons for O’Neill’s decision are unclear as of yet, though it is reportedly related to the imminent sale of James Milner to Manchester City and Ashley Young’s potential exit.
Ladbrokes had suspended their market on Monday afternoon as bets poured in for the Aston Villa boss to leave.
Villa are 9/1 to finish in the top four, but their plans for the future season will have been severely disrupted by O’Neill’s abrupt departure.
“It’s obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club,” O’Neill said. “I wish them all the best for the future. I will obviously be assisting the club in the immediate short-term with regard to the handover of my duties.”
