Arsenal line up an audacious bid for Liverpool’s Pepe Reina

With Fabregas finally calling time on the Barcelona transfer speculation, Arsene Wenger can now concentrate on his side’s title hopes for the coming season, and one key position that the Frenchman is looking to strengthen is in goal.

Almunia and Fabianski hardly covered themselves in glory last season, and with a decent Arsenal spine boasting van Persie, Fabregas, and Vermaelen, Wenger is reportedly lining up a £23million bid for Liverpool’s stopper, Pepe Reina.

According to reports, Wenger sees Reina as the solution to his goalkeeping problems, and would be willing to go up to £25million to land his man.

Of course, Liverpool would be loathed to get rid of one of their prize assets – quite probably their best performer last season – especially in light of a possible influx of money coming from new investors.

Plus, it was only in April that Reina put pen to paper and signed a new deal with the club, which would see him at Anfield for at least another five years.

Much surely depends on exactly what happens with the current Liverpool ownership battle.

Whatever the outcome, with his young side now maturing, Wenger will be looking to build on seven years of hurt, having not won the league since 2004.

Arsenal are currently the fourth favourites to take the title, with odds of 6/1. Whilst their odds of finishing as the top London club – above Chelsea, Spurs, Fulham, and West Ham – are interesting at 5/2.

That said, they haven’t finished above Chelsea since winning the title in 2004.
