Villa and Sneijder go head-to-head in Golden Shoe duel
Published:As well as being a battle between Spain and Holland for the World Cup, Sunday’s final will be a personal duel between David Villa and Wesley Sneijder.
The two players have been the driving forces for their respective sides in South Africa, and with nine goals between them, they are in direct competition to be the World Cup’s top scorer.
Whether it is Villa or Sneijder, history will be made if either wins the Golden Shoe, as there has never been a Spanish or Dutch winner of the award.
Having already scored five, Villa leads the way in the race to be the World Cup’s top goalscorer, and he is 8/11 to add this gong to his accolade of being the leading scorer at Euro 2008.
Sneijeder, meanwhile, is one behind with four strikes to his name, and the Dutch playmaker is 3/1 to win the Golden Shoe.
At 11/10 to win inside 90 minutes, Spain are the favourites to win the World Cup, and Villa is 7/2 to open the scoring on Sunday night.
With their perfect record of six wins from six matches in South Africa, however, Holland are a very tempting bet to win in normal time at 5/2.
Spain’s semi-final hero Carles Puyol is 40/1 to break the deadlock, as he did with his crashing header against Germany.
And if you want to back an outsider to claim Holland’s opener, you can bet on Giovanni Van Bronckhorst at 33/1 to follow his screamer against Uruguay with the first goal against Spain.
