US Open gives Murray chance to finally claim Grand Slam glory
Published:Following his impressive run to the Wimbledon semi-finals, Andy Murray is 7/2 to win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
The US Open arguably represents the Scot’s best chance of winning a Grand Slam, as he has won 12 of his 14 career titles on hard courts.
Murray’s two best performances at a Grand Slam – at the 2010 Australian Open and 2008 US Open – were also on a hard surface.
Murray’s conqueror at Flushing Meadows two years ago was Roger Federer, who is 11/4 to win the tournament for a sixth time.
With the two players on opposite sides of the draw, there is a chance that they might face each other again in the final.
Federer, however, will have to overcome Rafael Nadal at the semi-final stage to get that far. Nadal has strengthened his hold on the world number one ranking, and he is 3/1 to win the US Open for the first time.
Other contenders for the US Open include new world number two Novak Djokovic (8/1 to win) and Wimbledon finalist Thomas Berdych (12/1).
In 2004, Murray won the US Open junior title, and his experience of winning at Flushing Meadows could prove invaluable this year.
There is a historic correlation between both events, with Andy Roddick (14/1 to win the US Open) crowned junior champion in 2000 before winning the senior competition in 2003.
Murray has won 10 of his 14 hard court matches in 2010, though he is still searching for his first title of the year. Where better, then, for Murray to win his first competition in 2010 than at Flushing Meadows in August?
