Euro transfer news – Raul hints at possible Premier League move

Published:

After 16 glorious years at the Bernabeu, Raul has left Real Madrid and has hinted strongly that his future could lie in the Premier League.

The striker was believed to be on the verge of joining Schalke, and while the Bundesliga club’s interest remains firm, the 33-year-old is considering his options.

“The German team is interested in me and I have had very deep discussions with them,” Raul said. “There are other teams that are also interested,” he added. “What is clear is that my future lies in Germany or England.”

Raul, who is the all-time leading scorer for both Real Madrid and Spain, has been linked with a move to Liverpool, Blackburn and Tottenham this summer.

And while Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is believed to be scouring the transfer market for a forward, he has distanced his side – 28/1 to win the Premier League – from a move for Raul.

“Raul is a great player,” Redknapp has said. “But financially I don’t think it would be possible to do a deal like that.”

Schalke have expressed no such doubts, and as they remain favourites to sign Raul, Felix Magath’s side look like a tempting bet at 7/1 to win the Bundesliga this season.

Another Real Madrid stalwart to bid farewell to the Bernabeu this summer is midfielder Guti, who has joined Besiktas on a free transfer.
