Transfer news – Liverpool complete free signing of Joe Cole

Published:

Liverpool have signed Joe Cole on a four-year deal following the England midfielder’s release from Chelsea.

Cole had been linked with a move to Arsenal and Tottenham, but the West Ham academy product was persuaded to move north after meeting Liverpool’s new manager, Roy Hodgson.

14/1 Premier League contenders Liverpool have already signed Serbian forward Milan Jovanovic, though rumours persist that star players such as Javier Mascherano are on their way out of Anfield.

And while Cole’s arrival is a boost to Hodgson’s squad, it also raises questions about the future of Liverpool’s captain, Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard has long been linked with a move away from Anfield, and Cole could be seen as a replacement for the Reds’ captain in midfield. You can bet on Gerrard not being a Liverpool player on the first day of the season at 6/4.

Cole, 28, has accepted a contract with a weekly wage believed to be worth £90,000, and is expected to join Liverpool at their pre-season training camp in Switzerland.

Can Hodgson hold on to his stars? Fernando Torres is 7/4 not to be a Liverpool player on the first day of the season. See the full Liverpool Specials market.
