Nadal tipped to follow Wimbledon triumph with US Open win
Published:Having regained the Wimbledon title with a routine win against Thomas Berdych, Rafael Nadal is now the second favourite – at 7/2 – to win the US Open.
The competition at Flushing Meadows begins on August 30th, and Nadal enters the tournament as the world’s number one ranked player following his success at SW19.
His path to the final will be made difficult, however, by a host of quality competitors.
Having won the US Open for a record five consecutive years between 2004 and 2008, Roger Federer is the 5/2 favourite to be victorious at Flushing Meadows this year.
Following two quarter-final eliminations at Rolland Garros and Wimbledon this year, though, Federer has dropped to third place in the world rankings, his lowest position since 2003.
Whereas nine of Federer’s record 16 Grand Slam titles have been won on hard courts, Nadal has been victorious in only one major on a hard surface.
His solitary hard court Grand Slam came in Australia last year, and he will be hoping to add the US Open to his ever-expanding trophy cabinet.
Andy Murray is 7/2 to win his first ever Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, a tournament which the Scot describes as his favourite.
A US Open finalist in 2008, Murray will be fresh from a run to the Wimbledon semi-finals, and with 12 of his 14 career titles coming on hard courts, he is a genuine contender.
Having lost to Marin Cilic at last year’s US Open, and to Federer at the Australian Open earlier this year, Murray will be desperate to finally triumph at a Grand Slam.
Home favourite Andy Roddick, meanwhile, is 20/1 to be crowned champion at Flushing Meadows for a second time.
