Klose takes on Forlan in chase for historic goalscoring double
Published:There will be more than mere bragging rights at stake in the third-place play-off as Miroslav Klose and Diego Forlan battle for the Golden Shoe.
Both players are tied on four World Cup goals each to date, as David Villa leads the way as the 4/6 favourite to be the top tournament goalscorer with five strikes to his name.
Klose is 9/2 to win the Golden Shoe, and the German striker has the extra incentive of going for a historical personal double.
The 32-year-old still has the chance to become the leading scorer in World Cup history, as he is just one goal behind Ronaldo’s record of 15.
Klose is 9/2 to break the record, and two goals against Uruguay in the third-place play-off would see the Bayern Munich marksman pass the landmark.
Croatia’s Davor Suker used the same stage to clinch the Golden Shoe in 1998, as his goal secured third place for the Eastern Europeans with a 2-1 win against Holland.
Chief among Klose’s competitors for the award will be his Uruguayan counterpart on Sunday, Forlan, who is 16/1 to win the Golden Shoe.
Forlan is 6/1 to open the scoring against Germany, and he will be desperate to lead his team to their best World Cup finish since winning the trophy in 1950.
Forlan, however, will not be the only player who Germany will have to keep an eye on, as his fellow striker Luis Suarez is 8/1 to score first on his return from suspension.
And at 40/1, Suarez could be worth backing to score a hat-trick and dramatically leapfrog his rivals to win the Golden Shoe.
