Holland horror as Paul the Octopus plumps for Spain

Published:

Paul the Octopus, the sea-dweller with a record for predicting football results, has today gone for Spain to beat Holland in the World Cup final.

Bettors may want to put their money where his tentacles are, as Paul has correctly predicted each of Germany’s matches at this World Cup. Spain to win the World Cup is an 8/11 shot.

Spain fans should be rejoicing at the psychic pulpo’s selection, given he also said Joachim Low’s side would beat Australia, Ghana, England and Argentina as well as lose to Serbia and La Roja in the semis.

Holland fans will hope his form doesn’t translate over to matches not featuring Germany, though, and may even point to the creature’s Euro 2008 final prediction, when he wrongly went for the Fatherland – his only mistake to date.

Housed at the Aquarium Sea Life in Oberhausen, Germany, Paul makes his choice by taking mussels out of one of two glass cubes, with each cube bearing one of the nation’s flags on the front.

Bert Van Marwijk will hope the hype surrounding Paul is a lot of pus about nothing and continue to plan for a Holland victory – an 11/8 chance.

Paul the Octopus also made a selection for the Uruguay v Germany third-place play-off match, going for his home nation once again. Germany to finish third is 3/10.

Will Paul’s prophecy unnerve the Dutch? They are 9/1 to lose on penalties. See the full Holland v Spain match betting market.
