Dark horse Djokovic could spring a surprise at US Open
Published:Fresh from his run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic is priced at a very enticing 8/1 to win the US Open.
With the attention firmly on tennis’s supposed holy trinity of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, Djokovic has moved almost unnoticed to a career high ranking of number two in the world.
The Serbian, however, could be about to shock his much-vaunted rivals at Flushing Meadows when the US Open gets underway next month.
Djokovic has won 17 career titles and, crucially, he has the experience of winning a Grand Slam following his Australian Open triumph in 2008.
13 of Djokovic’s 17 titles have been on hard courts, and his taste for this surface bodes well for the showpiece event of the summer’s hard court season.
Standing in Djokovic’s way will be the usual suspects. Federer is 11/4 to win a sixth US Open and Nadal is 3/1 to triumph at Flushing Meadows.
Murray, meanwhile, is 7/2 to add the senior US Open crown to the junior title he won in 2004.
Djokovic could face either Federer or Nadal in the final, and neither player will daunt the Serbian.
The 23-year-old beat Federer in the 2008 Australian Open final, and he has won his last three meetings with Nadal.
Djokovic is a player of undoubted talent, and with his big tournament pedigree, the world number two looks like a player to back at Flushing Meadows.
