Slovenia vs USA – win can edge USA towards last 16

Published:

The USA, who many consider to be England’s fiercest competitors for Group C top spot, are 11/10 favourites to beat Slovenia when the sides meet on Friday at 3pm.

Slovenia currently head Group C having won their opening match against Algeria 1-0, and they are 5/2 to record their second win against the USA.

This will be the first ever meeting between the sides, and recent form favours Slovenia, who have seven wins from their last eight matches.

While their victory against Algeria was hardly pulsating, Slovenia’s solid defensive showing was typical of a team who have conceded just four goals from their last eight fixtures.

USA, meanwhile, have been inconsistent of late. They have lost five of their last nine matches, though they are also unbeaten in their three most recent games.

Bob Bradley’s side will be buoyed by their 1-1 draw with England, and they could take a huge stride towards the last 16 with victory against Slovenia.

Jozy Altidore caused problems for England’s defenders, and he is 6/1 to score first against Slovenia, while Clint Dempsey is a tempting 9/1 to open the scoring.

Slovenia’s Milivoje Novakovic has 16 goals from 38 caps and he is 7/1 to be the first goalscorer in this fixture. Robert Koren, who scored the winner against Algeria, is 14/1 to score first.

With both sides vying for a place in the round of 16, this could be a tight affair. It could be, however, the USA’s superior major tournament experience (they have reached the knock-out stages on three occasions) which gives them the edge.
